Iceland shocked the footballing world by eliminating England from the Euro 2016 last night.
The only good news for the Three Lions is that their manager Roy Hodgson resigned after the embarrassing defeat.
England took the lead in the fourth minute thanks to Wayne Rooney from the spot kick. However, Iceland scored two goals in the space of next 15 minutes to turn the tie around.
Hodgson had 70 odd minutes to bounce back, however, his team did not even create a single clear cut opportunity against an impressive Iceland side and were deservedly knocked out of the competition.
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s team will now face hosts France in the quarter finals of the European Championships.

Disgraceful. Every free-kick or corner taken in the entire tournament seemed to either hit the first defender or go flying far to high over everybody. Absolutely awful! When Lallana has been impressive on the right wing, even though he didn’t score, why did we have a striker – Sturridge – playing on the right wing and looking totally out of his comfort zone. Number of worthwhile crosses he made? Probably nil. Number of shots? Probably nil.
And as for fatso giving the ball away and being over-run in midfield, can’t we melt him down for his blubber? Rooney must go and go soon if this is what we can expect from him.
Humiliated in the last World Cup, we got out of the easiest qualifying group ever seen in the Euros and then got stuffed by mighty Iceland. This is too bad to believe . . .
As for Kane, did we find a doppelganger who looks like him but who couldn’t hit a cow’s a++e with a banjo? He was simply shocking with his useless free-kicks and obsession with taking corners . . . when he should, as a striker, have been in the middle waiting for those free-kicks and corners to come his way.
I’m also beginning to wonder if the hype about Alli is a bit too much? His initial impact, a few games ago, was brilliant but he’s done very little in this tournament. Is reality kicking in?
Joe Hart? Sorry, on current form I wouldn’t let him carry the potato peelings to the bin let alone risk seeing him trying to keep goal for England. What has gone wrong with the guy?
Even the centre backs looked poor, devoid of confidence and incapable of dominating.
When not one England player can get more than two out of ten I think we need to accept that we are crap! The manager couldn’t decide what his best tactics were, he didn’t know which to use and the players obviously didn’t know which was being used at any one time! How poor was that!
Sorry, I think we need to accept now that Hart and Rooney should be phased-out and begin to add a touch of reality to Kane . . . who isn’t as good as he thinks he is. When he shoots, with a free-kick, from over forty yards, which he did yet again last night, when his previous ten free-kicks have bombarded either the fans far, far behind the goal or the corner flags we’ve got to accept he isn’t likely to score . . . but he keeps doing it!
Tactically inept, completely out of form and, when you’ve got a striker playing wide – poorly – instead of a player – Lallana – who has played well in that position in every game so far, it’s time to pack the bags and come home . . . which is exactly what we are doing! Thank God Hodgson had the decency to quit within seconds of the final whistle.
Can somebody tell me why our free-kick delivery is so woeful? And it’s not just in this game, it’s awful most games. Good luck to Iceland!
The only decent thing to come out of last night is the useless, waste of space manager Hodgson resigned. That is at least one piece of good news! The performance overall was dull and unimaginative, lacking in any real drive and direction. Several players played out of position, or at least not in their best position with too much emphasis put on certain players who are either too full of their own self importance or who should consider international retirement. Iceland showed more drive and determination and for a team of part-time players, showed more cohesiveness and energy. England seemed wrapped up in their own air of “self-importance” thinking that Iceland were going to be a ‘pushover’ and that they were a ‘shoe-in’ for the quarter finals. Well that did not work out now did it? Frankly, the better team won and deserve their shot against France. All power to them!
I know I voted to get out of Europe but this wasn’t what I had in mind . . .
