It looks more and more likely that Manchester United are going to lose out on their prime transfer target Thiago Alcantara this summer. Bayern Munich’s and ex-Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola is favorite to sign his former Catalan star much to the despair of United supporters.
However, Moyes has to sign someone to fill the void left by Paul Scholes, perhaps the most important signing of this transfer window. Now, reports suggest that Manchester United are to bid for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric as an alternate for Thiago but bringing Croatian to Old Trafford is not going to be easy as well.
Manchester United have tried to sign him in previous transfer windows as well but Tottenham were reluctant to let the player leave for another premier league club and were asking for a very high price. Eventually, the Croat departed for Real Madrid last summer.
The problem for United is that new Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti is likely to have Modric in his plans for next season. The two time Champions league winner with Milan is a keen admirer of Luka Modric and it is highly likely that Carlo will keep him at the Bernabeu. Ancelotti claimed last summer:
“I did not need to see him (Modric) at the Euro to know how much talent he has. I knew his capabilities before. Now he has confirmed his high quality for those who did not know.”
If that is not enough then Ancelotti was also determined to land the midfielder during his time at Chelsea, confirmed by a source close to the Croatian back then by Zdravko Mamic, the Dinamo Zagreb vice-president.
Adding to that Madrid paid a mammoth 33 million pounds for his services and he has was in good form in the end of last season. However, Ancelotti has also signed young Asier Illaramendi for a hefty sum and he is someone who can play in Modric’s position.
The only hope for United is that if somehow Modric realize that he will be a starter week in week out at Old Trafford. Whereas at Real Madrid, top quality players like Khedira, Xabi Alonso and now Illaramendi will be fighting for the starting places and may keep him on the bench. Else signing former Spurs star is very unlikely.
Surely, David Moyes will have to splash more $$$ on Luka Modric than the expected 18 million Euros on Thiago Alcantara. Will United be able to finally sign Modric, we shall have the answer soon.
