Reports in the media suggest that Newcastle United have finally sealed a deal for Lille star Mathieu Debuchy. The French international is a versatile defender who normally plays at right back, but has also been deployed as a deep lying playmaker as well.
The Magpies have been after Debuchy for a long time. They signed Cabaye from the same club in 2011. Newcastle had their bids rejected for Debuchy during the summer as Lille’s president rejected their bids claiming that:
“The offer is definitely not at the value of the player.”
Newcastle are without any depth especially in the defensive department and Debuchy’s arrival will give them a major boost. Although they have been able to score 6 goals in their last 2 premier league games but the defense has been woeful as they conceded no less than 11 goals in the same period, including a staggering seven against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Debuchy featured in all the games of European Championships and was France’s best defender. Adding to that, the signing fee is only going to be around 5 million pounds that is a serious bargain considering the quality that he will add to the side.
Currently, Danny Simpson plays at the right back position for the Magpies. With the imminent arrival of Debuchy, his future might be in uncertainty as he has not signed a new deal yet and the contract will expire in six months.
The 27 year old Debuchy has made 13 international appearances for France and has featured in 233 games for his boyhood club Lille. His experience will be beneficial for the Tyneside who desperately need someone strong in the defense.
Debuchy’s addition in the defensive set up might not be the last piece of business in this transfer market for Newcastle. Currently sitting 15th in the league, only 3 points away from the relegation spot, Magpies surely need more reinforcements in defense and perhaps in attack too as their star striker Demba Ba is likely to leave in the coming transfer season.
