Southampton, on the other hand, started in a mediocre way, earning 5 points from 5 matches. The Saints struggled last season and were in the relegation battle while Liverpool played the Champions League Final. The expectations this year are that Liverpool will contend the Premier League title and teams like Southampton should not be a hindrance.

Liverpool vs. Southampton Odds

5 straight wins with just two goals conceded – that’s what Liverpool fans believe – their season and their first Premier League in this format of the tournament will be.
Not a surprise, Liverpool are a bookmakers’ favourite with 1.20 to win. However, what is an even more ambitious bet is Liverpool to win first half and the match.
Liverpool HT/FT win – 1.66

Liverpool vs. Southampton Head to Head

Liverpool are famous for regularly buying Southampton players and have not lost to them 3 matches in a row with a goalless draw back in May 2017 and two wins in November 2017 and February 2018 (3-0 and 2-0).
Liverpool have not lost in 10 successive matches while Saints’ streak is just three matches in all competitions (including 1-0 win over Brighton in EFL).
Liverpool were the first team to score in their past 9 matches and have won at HT in their past 8 matches.

Liverpool vs. Southampton News

Liverpool have defeated PSG at Anfield on Tuesday in a 3-2 thriller which gained them additional confidence.
Despite the fact Lovren and Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss the match, Firmino is likely to play which will provide Liverpool with additional fire power.
Southampton have no key players to miss the match, with Shane Long likely to play.

Liverpool vs. Southampton Predictions

A win for Liverool and nothing else is what everyone would expect. So we are, but the odds of just 1.20 make the bet not all that attractive.
With Liverpool being the host and having conceded just 2 goals in 5 Premier League games, it is unlikely for Southampton to score.
Liverpool win and clean sheet – 1.90

Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata were on the scoresheet for the Blues during the second period as they ensured their progress to their second final in the competition in as many seasons.

Three things we learned:
Olivier Giroud continues his fine FA Cup record: Giroud had been in a good run of form coming into the game after netting a match-winning brace at Southampton last weekend. Obviously, the Frenchman’s record against the Saints has been mostly talked about but his opener on Sunday meant that he has contributed towards 22 goals in just 26 FA Cup appearances. This includes a couple of match-winning assists for ex-Arsenal teammate Aaron Ramsey in the 2014 and 2017 editions of the FA Cup final.
Chelsea can send off Antonio Conte on a high: Antonio Conte’s position at Stamford Bridge remains uncertain despite the Blues having progressed to the FA Cup final. Whilst Conte has refused to comment on his future, the Blues’ hierarchy have presumably made their mind up to recruit a new head coach. As such, Chelsea players have the opportunity to end the Italian’s tenure on a high and the 48-year-old would no doubt love another chance to trump United boss Jose Mourinho to lift the FA Cup.
Chelsea’s push for a top-four finish: Until last weekend, Chelsea looked down and out in their top-four pursuit as they surrendered a 2-0 goal advantage to Southampton. However, they managed to script a dramatic comeback to secure a 3-2 triumph and they have since won back-to-back games across all competitions. During the same period, fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur have gone winless and the Blues can now put more pressure on their cross-town rivals whose 10-point advantage has been halved in a week.

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea face-off against Southampton in Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off at St Mary’s. The Blues are more or less out of the top-four after their stalemate versus West Ham United, and the Saints game should act as a dress rehearsal ahead of the FA semi-final against the same opposition next weekend.

Formation: 3-4-3
Lineup:
Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been the first-choice for the Premier League duties when fit. Courtois should make his second-straight appearance this weekend, and he will be aiming to end his four-game league streak without a shutout.
In defence, Conte is likely to stick with his regular combination, and this could witness Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen making up a three-man backline. Gary Cahill earned a rare start owing to Christensen’s fatigue last weekend, but the Dane should return to the mix.
Ahead of them, Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso can be fancied to feature in their regular right wing-back and left wing-back positions respectively, whilst Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante are more or less the suited candidates to form the central midfield partnership.
Conte has shown a reluctance to rotate his forward options of late, and this may be a sign of the Italian seeking a bond between his players. Willian and Eden Hazard are pretty much certain to start on the left and right wing respectively with Alvaro Morata getting another opportunity to lead the line.
Morata now has competition behind him in the form of Oliver Giroud, and his current form guarantees him a start. Since late March, the Spaniard has netted in the games against Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur, and this has been followed by an assist for Azpilicueta’s goal last weekend.
Predicted Chelsea lineup (3-4-3): Thibaut Courtois, Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, Victor Moses, Cesc Fabregas, N’Golo Kante, Marcos Alonso, Willian, Eden Hazard, Alvaro Morata

The Reds are now third in the table and only two points behind Manchester United (2nd), who lost their last PL fixture against Newcastle United.
Liverpool started the game in brilliant fashion and it took them only six minutes to open the scoring.
Star playmaker Mohamed Salah played in Brazilian international Roberto Firmino, who slotted the ball in the net scoring his 20th goal (all competitions) of the season.
After going behind, the Saints dominated possession in the first half and responded well by putting pressure on Liverpool’s back line. The home side did create decent chances and should have scored at least a goal but Karius made few key saves.
In the 42nd minute of the contest, Liverpool doubled their lead after a fantastic one two between Firmino and Salah. The Egyptian international netted his 22nd league goal of the campaign.
The Merseysiders were dominant in the second 45 minutes and Karius was mainly a spectator. However, Jurgen Klopp’s men failed to increase their lead and the contest ended 2-0.
Few days back, the Merseysiders revealed on their website that they had reached an agreement with Southampton and Van Dijk to complete the transfer of the Dutch star.
The winter transfer window opened today and now, the Reds have officially sealed the signing of the 26-year-old defender.
As per reports going on in the media, Liverpool have sealed the signing of the Netherlands star for a fee (The Guardian) worth 75 million pounds (€84million).
Virgil moved to the Premier League after winning two Scottish league titles with Celtic. In his first campaign with the Saints, he won the club’s Player of the Season prize.
He made 12 appearances for Southampton in the current campaign and now, Liverpool supporters will be looking forward to his debut. Klopp has confirmed (LFC) that the club will take their time and prepare Van Dijk well before he gets his first game.
After spending the above mentioned fee, Virgil will likely get straight into the starting XI. It will be intriguing to see who will be his long term partner in the central defense.

The Saints have been very poor lately. They won their last league game more than a month ago versus Everton. Can they get something at Old Trafford?
As far as Jose Mourinho’s team news is concerned, at the moment, no fewer than 7 players are suffering from injury concerns (PhysioRoom) and that is a huge dilemma for the Portuguese boss.
In the last contest against Burnley, United bounced back from 2 goals down to earn a point at home thanks to a brace scored by Jesse Lingard, who came on the field in the second half.
The 25-year-old attacker has been in top form recently and must get the nod to start. He should replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the team.
Here is Man Utd’s strongest possible 4-2-3-1 XI vs Southampton.
Now, the Reds have finally got their man. Last night, the Merseysiders confirmed that they have agreed deals with Southampton and the Dutch defender to secure his signing, which will come into effect when the winter transfer window opens on Monday.
This means that the 26-year-old star will be eligible to play for Liverpool when they face Burnley on New Year’s Day.
If reports in the media are anything to go by then Liverpool have agreed deals worth £126.5million to seal the signing of the former Celtic center half.
As per the Guardian, Liverpool have agreed £75million fee with the Saints and a five and a half year contract worth £180,000-a-week (£51.5million until June 2023) with the Netherlands defender.
Virgil is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League. He was in top class form for the Saints in the last campaign but suffered a foot injury that made him miss the second half of the campaign.
This season, he has featured in 12 league games for the Saints and in all fairness, his form has not been good. In your opinion, is Van Dijk good enough to solve the ongoing defensive dilemma at Anfield?

The Reds are already out of the title race but if they are to progress in the Champions League then they must sign a top defender.
Yesterday, we covered a report (via Sunday World) claiming that Liverpool are close to signing Van Dijk as they have agreed a payment plan to lure the Southampton star, who is valued at 70 million pounds ($93.6million).
Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have been Klopp’s first choice central defenders this season. Lately, Klavan has started because the former Schalke defender has been out injured but he could feature vs Swansea.
Since joining the Saints from Celtic, Virgil has proved that he is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League and that is the reason why the demand for his services and the asking price is very high.
If he does end up moving to Anfield then he should get straight into the starting XI. Liverpool’s defense has been inconsistent and Lovren has arguably been the most inconsistent center half, therefore, Van Dijk should replace the Croatian to partner Matip in the back line.
Here is how Liverpool will line up with Van Dijk.
If reports in the media are anything to go by then the Reds have finally agreed a fee for the the Saints star, who will join the Anfield club next month.
According to Sunday World (press image provided below), Liverpool were reluctant to pay the 70 million pounds (€78million) asking price for the player but their stance has now changed after agreeing on a payment plan that suits both the clubs.
Also Read: Club Join Race but £90million Star Wants to Sign for Liverpool
It is mentioned that Liveprool have made a breakthrough and a deal that is believed to get close to Southampton’s €78million valuation has been thrashed out. Furthermore, it is stated that Liverpool will not pay the full asking price in one lump sump and have agreed a deal that will include additional payments.
The 26-year-old former Celtic star is one of the best central defenders in the Premier League, who will largely improve Liverpool’s back line.
Not to forget, he will be eligible to play in the Champions League for the Merseysiders, who badly need a strong defense if they are to have any chance of winning the competition.
The Dutch international is one of the best center halves in the league, he was linked with a move away from the Saints in the summer as well but eventually stayed.
Now, according to the Times, Manchester City are targeting the signing of the 26-year-old defender, who has been tracked by Liverpool for a long time.
Moreover, the British source have mentioned that Wenger is also weighing up whether to splash the cash to sign the former Celtic star, who is rated at 70 million pounds ($93million).
Van Dijk was left out of the Southampton squad for the entire month of August due to transfer speculation. After that, he has featured 12 times in the Premier League. Yesterday, he warmed the bench in the defeat against Chelsea.
In your opinion, should Wenger sign Van Dijk?
