Boateng has failed to make 30 or more league appearances in any of his seven seasons with the Bavarian giants and his recent struggles with a hamstring injury has been highlighted as the main worry. At around £50m, the German has been highlighted as a cost-cut option compared to Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld but Boateng’s arrival at Old Trafford may not be well received from some of the United faithful.

Karim Benzema makes his mark for Real Madrid: The Frenchman has not had the best of seasons in the Real Madrid shirt and he is currently experiencing his second-worst campaign since arriving at the Bernabeu. Benzema’s selection ahead of Gareth Bale would surely have not gone well with a section of the fans but the Frenchman managed to repay the manager’s faith with a brace on the night. Benzema pounced on the poor organisation from the Bayern defence to head in the opener before taking advantage of Ulreich’s howler to score in front of an open goal.
