The Saints had not conceded a single goal in the competition going in to the final but the Red Devils scored three past them to win the silverware.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened the scoring for the Old Trafford club in the 19th minute. 19 minutes later, Jesse Lingard doubled the advantage and United were cruising.
However, Puel’s men bounced back in style. Manolo Gabbiadini scored right before half time to get the Saints back into the game. He added another three minutes into the second half to level the tie.
Southampton were dominant in the first twenty minutes of the second half and came close to taking the lead when Romeu’s header hit the post. However, United regained control and piled constant pressure on the Saints’ defense.
In the 87th minute of the game, Herrera provided a brilliant ball and Zlatan scored the winning goal with a bullet header.
Here are Man United player ratings vs Southampton.
Who will come out on top?
The Red Devils have won their last five games in all competitions. On the other hand, the Saints have won 2 and lost 3 of their last five fixtures.
Claude Peul’s men have been brilliant in the EFL Cup this season. They have won all five games in the competition without even conceding a single goal, even against the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool, who are the joint top scorers in the Premier League.
Therefore, Mourinho’s team will have to work very hard to break Southampton’s solid defense.
As far as Man United’s team news is concerned, the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Michael Carrick suffered injuries in the last game against Saint-Etienne in the Europa League.
Expect the likes of Herrera and Fellaini to line up in the center of the park for the Old Trafford club. In the attack, Martial should replace Mkhitaryan to partner Pogba and Mata behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
The likes of Valencia, Rojo and De Gea will likely return to the starting XI as well. Here is Man Utd’s strongest possible 4-2-3-1 XI vs Southampton.
Still, manager Jose Mourinho has opted for a very strong starting XI against the Tigers tonight.
Spanish international David De Gea starts in goal ahead of Argentine goalie Sergio Romero.
As far as the defense is concerned, Italian fullback Matteo Darmian starts in the right back position. The likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling start in the central defense for the Red Devils. Marcos Rojo starts in the left back position.
In the center of the park, Michael Carrick returns and his midfield partner is former Atheltic Bilbao star Ander Herrera, who will be making his 100th appearance in Man United colors tonight.
Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again starts as the lone forward up front. The likes of Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and record signing Paul Pogba start behind the former Barcelona striker.
Here is Man Utd’s confirmed XI formation vs Hull.
Southampton defeated the Reds 1-0 at St. Mary’s in the first leg. Can the Merseysiders turn the tie around?
Jurgen Klopp’s men have failed to score against Puel’s team in two games this season and they need to step up big time to qualify for the final.
As far as the team news is concerned, Karius was fantastic in the first leg and starts ahead of Mignolet tonigh. Joel Matip has returned to the starting XI and he will partner Dejan Lovren in the central defense.
Nathaniel Clyne is once again out due to a rib concern and in his absence, young Trent Alexander-Arnold starts in the right back position. Lallana has moved back into the midfield and he will partner Can and Henderson in the center of the park.
Sturridge gets the nod ahead of Origi to start with Coutinho and Firmino in the attack. Here is Liverpool’s confirmed XI formation vs the Saints.
Can the Reds turn the tie around at Anfield? We shall see.
The Merseysiders have been absolutely average since the turn of the year and badly miss star playmaker Sadio Mane. Last weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s men were beaten at home for the first time this season.
As far as Liverpool’s team news is concerned, because it is a must win game, the German manager might not make many changes in the starting XI that played vs the Swans in the PL.
The midfield partnership of Hendo, Can and Gini has not worked at all and the Reds need Lallana back in the center of the park.
The skipper has a slight foot injury but may feature against the Saints tomorrow night. Moreno may replace Milner and Matip should replace Klavan in the defense. The likes of Origi, Sturridge and Coutinho may start in the attack.
Here is Liverpool’s potential 4-3-3 XI vs Southampton.
Jose Mourinho will be looking to return to winning ways when United face Hull in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi final.
Manchester United have one foot in the final of the competition after beating the Tigers 2-0 in the first leg at Old Trafford. The former Chelsea boss is expected to make more than a few changes in the starting lineup that featured vs the Potters.
Bastian Schweinsteiger should return to the starting XI and partner Michael Carrick in the center of the park.
Argentine goalie Sergio Romero may replace David De Gea. As far as the defense is concerned, the likes of Marcos Rojo and Matteo Darmian may return to the starting XI as well.
Next up, the Reds will face the Saints in the second leg of the EFL Cup semifinal. Liverpool lost the first leg 1-0 away from home, can they turn the tie around at Anfield? We shall see.
As far as the team news is concerned, Liverpool do not have any major injury concern at the moment but they have badly missed star playmaker Sadio Mane. Since he left for the AFCON, the Merseysiders have only won one game out of five.
On the other hand, Southampton are facing an injury crisis. Currently, they have eight players (PhysioRoom) out injured and star center half Virgil van Dijk is the latest name on the list.
The Dutch international suffered an ankle injury in yesterday’s fixture against Leicester City and he is a doubt for the clash against Liverpool on Wednesday night (Liverpool Echo).
The 25-year-old defender has been fantastic for the Saints this season. Virgil absolutely bullied Sturridge in the first leg and his absence will be a major boost for the Reds.
German goalie Loris Karius starts ahead of Simon Mignolet in the lineup. As far as the defense is concerned, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and James Milner start.
Captain Jordan Henderson is still out injured and Lucas Leiva will start in the defensive midfield position for the Reds tonight.
In front of the Brazilian international, the likes of Emre Can and Wijnaldum will be playing in the midfield. As far as the attack is concerned, Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana start behind lone center forward Daniel Sturridge.
The best possible for the Liverpool supporters is that star playmaker Coutinho is fit now and he is going to start on the bench. The former Inter star may get some game time tonight.
Here is Liverpool’s confirmed starting XI formation vs the Saints.
Who will come out on top tomorrow night?
After a four game winning run in the league, the Reds have failed to win their last two matches and Klopp will be hoping to bounce back against the Saints.
The big guns should return for the league cup tie. The likes of James Milner and Coutinho are set to return to the squad. Expect Simon Mignolet to replace Loris Karius in the starting XI.
As far as the back four is concerned, Moreno will probably retain his starting place and the likes of Klavan, Lovren and Clyne are expected to return.
Henderson is still recovering and that means we may have to see Emre Can start as a defensive midfielder again. The German international was average against Sunderland.
Daniel Sturridge should start as the lone striker up front. Origi and Firmino may start out wide. Here is Klopp’s strongest possible 4-3-3 Liverpool XI vs the Saints.
