Manchester United working on £55m deal for centre-back

Manchester United are reportedly prepared to discuss a summer move for Toby Alderweireld with manager Jose Mourinho not convinced by his options at the heart of the defence.
The Portuguese tactician witnessed United concede just 28 goals during the recently-concluded campaign but he is still unimpressed with the options in the defensive department.
As such, The Manchester Evening News claims that United are seeking to pursue Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur and they are prepared as much as £55m to push through a summer agreement.
Alderweireld has unquestionably been one of the Premier League most-consistent defenders over the past few seasons but his future at Spurs remains uncertain beyond the summer.
The Belgium international started the 2017/18 campaign as the first-choice centre-back alongside Jan Vertonghen but he happened to lose his place to Davinson Sanchez following a hamstring injury prior to the festive period.
On his return in February, the former Ajax graduate struggled to receive the assurance of regular gametime under Mauricio Pochettino and he finished the season with just 13 Premier League starts.
Taking this into regard, Alderweireld has been reluctant to pen a new Spurs contract beyond the summer of 2019 and the club are now considering his sale, given the one-year option on his contract, has a £25m release clause attached to it.
United boss Mourinho has reinforced the central defensive department over the past two seasons with the signings of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof respectively but neither have been able to cement a regular starting spot.
Bailly has been by far the club’s best central defender in terms of his tenacity but the Ivorian has suffered a couple of long-term injuries which have hampered his chances of establishing himself.
On the other hand, Lindelof has not quite adapted to the pace of the English game and this saw him being restricted to just 13 starts during his maiden Premier League campaign last term.

Chelsea planning summer approach for Tottenham Hotspur outcast

Chelsea are reportedly plotting a surprise raid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld at the end of the current campaign. The Belgium international has barely featured for Spurs since his recovery from a hamstring injury in February and his position at the club remains in doubt beyond the summer.
According to The Sun, the Blues are looking to take advantage of Alderweireld’s contractual situation in order to lure him to Stamford Bridge. The versatile defender presently has just 14 months left on his existing deal but his reluctance to extend his contract has seemingly put Spurs in a predicament.
As per The Sun, the Blues are prepared to lodge a bid of around £45m for the former Ajax graduate and this may entice Spurs into a sale despite the rivalry between the London clubs. Mauricio Pochettino’s side do have the option of triggering a 12-month extension clause in Alderweireld’s contract but this would, in turn, activate a £25m release clause which would stay active for 14 days after the close of the 2018/19 season.
Apart from Chelsea, there has also been interest from the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City but the latter appear to have ended their pursuit following their club-record signing of Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao during the January transfer window.
Alderweireld has been key towards Spurs’ progress over the past couple of seasons where he has emerged as the regular partner to compatriot Jan Vertonghen. However, during his period on the sidelines this term, summer signing Davinson Sanchez has impressed at the heart of the defence to the extent that Pochettino has stuck with the Colombian following Alderweireld’s comeback.
The Belgian’s current contract standoff with Spurs may have also hampered his chances of gaining regular playing time and it appears that Pochettino wants a settled backline for the 2018/19 campaign and beyond. Alderweireld has made three starts for Tottenham Hotspur since the turn of the year and just one of those have come in the top-flight.

Spurs’ wait for silverware continues: Tottenham Hotspur unquestionably have one of the most talent squads across Europe, but their failure to deliver trophies may disintegrate the side sooner rather than later. With the Cup exit, Spurs have gone over a decade without any silverware and Mauricio Pochettino needs to end this feat next season at the least. The likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen are being watched by many of Europe’s elite and neither would want to stick for the long-term, without trophy success.

David de Gea – The Spaniard was stranded for Spurs’ opening goal with the United defence falling to cut off the delivery. Apart from this, he had a relatively comfortable game with Spurs resorting to long-range shots – 6.5/10
Antonio Valencia – The Ecuadorian did a good job on Heung-Min Son on the right side and looked commanding with the ball in the opposition half. Lucky to not be sent off for a couple of fouls in the second period – 6.5/10
Phil Jones – The Englishman could not do much for the Spurs’ opener but besides this, he came flying with multiple clearances and was clearly a solid performer alongside compatriot Smalling – 7.5/10
Chris Smalling – Smalling has come for stick from the United faithful for his positioning, and it was a similar case in the first-half. As the game progressed, he got the better of Harry Kane with key interceptions – 6.5/10
Nemanja Matic – Struggled to cope with the initial threat from the opposition attack, but took up good positions following the interval whilst acting as a shield ahead of the backline – 6.5/10
Ander Herrera – The Spaniard truly deserves a contract extension for his efforts. Herrera produced another tenacious performance in midfield and this was capped off by a match-defining goal for United – 7.5/10
Paul Pogba – Started the game with a couple of giveaways but improved as the game went on. Provided the key assist for Alexis Sanchez’s opener after stealing the ball from Mousa Dembele – 7/10
Jesse Lingard – Not the best of games for the Englishman. Lingard struggled to find a flow in his passing during the game but he made a key decision to let the ball go for Herrera’s winner – 6/10
Alexis Sanchez – The Chilean’s selection was questioned prior to the game but he managed to prove his critics wrong with a wonderful header to pull United level. He continued to show enthusiasm with his forward play – 8/10
Romelu Lukaku – Lukaku struggled to make his presence felt in the opposition box barring the one occasion where his neat delivery set up Herrera for the match-winning goal – 6/10

Lukaku has notched at least one goal in each of the previous rounds of the FA Cup and Spurs may have to nullify his physical threat in order to come up with a positive outcome.
Harry Kane – Tottenham Hotspur: Like Lukaku, Kane has been the lynchpin in the Spurs attack and his injury comeback is undoubtedly a huge boost for the Cup meeting. The England international has netted twice since returning from a knee injury in early April and with this, he has become only the fourth player in Premier League history to score 20 goals in three consecutive seasons. The 24-year-old has netted four times for Spurs in three FA Cup outings and this includes a late goal at Newport County which avoided a major upset.
