Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 stage after they produced a rather underwhelming performance against Sevilla at Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho’s side were expected to dominate the proceedings after playing out a dull 0-0 draw on the road, but the Red Devils surprisingly struggled to exhibit their dominance.
Barring the opening exchanges, Sevilla managed to gain a decent possession of the ball, and they controlled the play at the heart of the midfield with Steven N’Zonzi putting in a stellar showing.
The match appeared to be headed for another goalless stalemate, which would have forced extra-time, but Wissam Ben Yedder changed the complexion of the game from the bench.
The Sevilla marksman scored twice after just six minutes onto the pitch, and this pretty much summed United’s performance, with Romelu Lukaku bagging the only consolation in a 2-1 aggregate defeat.
Three things we learned:
Jose Mourinho’s tactical decision: The Special One was praised for his awareness against Liverpool on Saturday, where he utilised the long-ball tactical to his side’s advantage. However, the same ploy backfired against Sevilla, who were more defensively sound than the Reds. Marouane Fellaini’s involvement ahead of Scott McTominay was another surprise, and the Belgian struggled to win the midfield battle over N’Zonzi, whilst tending to slow down the play.
Vincenzo Montella’s game-changing substitution: Much to the Neutral’s surprise, Ben Yedder did not make off the bench during the goalless draw at Sevilla last month. However, he got his chance to impress at Old Trafford from the bench in the 72nd minute and turned the tide of the game. The Andalusian outfit never looked like scoring with Luis Muriel on the field, but Ben Yedder took his chances with both hands to score a match-winning brace. The Frenchman should have bagged a well-deserved hat-trick right at the end.
Make or Break for Manchester United: For all the progress made through the season, United’s success could be determined on whether they can attain success via the FA Cup. The Red Devils ended the previously campaign on a high note by lifting the Europa League crown, and the players now have to sort out themselves to compete for Cup glory. The likes of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are likely to offer stiff competition, but Mourinho is certain to feel the pressure from the fans, if United go trophyless this term.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed the return of Anthony Martial ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League tie versus Sevilla. Paul Pogba, however, remains doubtful after having only participated during the final stages of the training session held on Monday morning.
In a report covered by United’s official website, the Portuguese tactician confirmed the good news regarding the fitness of Martial, who had missed recent outings versus Crystal Palace and Liverpool.
The France international had been recuperating from a minor thigh problem, and his arrival is likely to provide selection headaches for the manager, given Marcus Rashford bagged a match-winning brace against Liverpool during his absence.
Meanwhile, compatriot Pogba had suffered a deep gash on his leg after a challenge from Scott McTominay in training prior to the Reds game, and it appears that he has not fully recovered from the incident with Mourinho unsure over his participation.
Aside from this, United are pretty much with the same players from the previous game, with Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera in the treatment room, whilst Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s involvement has not been mentioned, despite the Swede featuring in an open-training session on Monday.
Manchester United settled for a 0-0 draw against Sevilla in the Champions League round of 16 first-leg last month, and their performance was rather underwhelming with the Andalusian outfit exhibiting their dominance in their home turf.
The La Liga side were still wasteful with their finishing for the most of the game, barring one bullet header from Luis Muriel from four yards which required the world-class reflexes from David de Gea to keep United level.
At Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho’s side should have the encouragement to attack from the off, but they still need to be wary of conceding an away goal, which could be detrimental, as they would then have to score at least twice, to stay in the competition.

Who will come out on top?
As far as Jose Mourinho’s team news is concerned, the Portuguese boss should make more than a few changes in the Man Utd team that started on Saturday.
Spanish international David De Gea should return to the starting XI and replace Argentine star Sergio Romero in the goal.
In the back line, we can expect Eric Bailly to return and start with Chris Smalling in the central defense. Valencia and Young should start in the fullback positions.
As far as the midfield is concerned, the likes of Ander Herrera and record signing Paul Pogba should return to partner Serbian defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic in the center of the park.
In the attacking third, Lingard and winter signing Sanchez will likely start behind lone center forward Lukaku.
Here is Man Utd’s predicted starting XI vs Sevilla.
The 29-year-old defensive midfielder has not featured for the Spanish club since he played against Liverpool in the Champions League at home.
Eduardo Berizzo had problems with the Les Bleus midfielder but now that Sevilla have sacked their manager, things might change.
Still, according to Express, Arsene Wenger is keen on securing the signing of the versatile defensive midfielder, who is rated around 30 million pounds (€34million). He has emerged as Arsenal’s priority target for the winter transfer window.
Steven has got ample Premier League experience having played 195 times in the competition and that is why other PL clubs like Everton and West Ham are interested in luring him as well (Express).
The British source have further mentioned that even Serie A champions Juventus are looking to hire the services of N’Zonzi, who has played 10 league games for Sevilla in the current campaign.
Arsenal have an over-crowded midfield department with more than a few defensive and central midfielders around. In your opinion, is N’Zonzi good enough to get straight into Wenger’s starting XI?

Still, recent, reports have linked Sevilla’s holding midfield star Steven N’Zonzi with Arsenal.
According to Daily Mail, the 29-year-old midfielder is in London and will hold talks with the likes of Arsenal and Everton as he is set to leave the Spanish club in the January transfer window.
Few days back, we covered a report (via El Gol) claiming that the North Londoners seem willing to meet Sevilla’s asking price to sign Steven, who has a release clause of 40 million euros. If that report is to be believed then the Gunners are perhaps favorites to sign him.
Contrary to the report covered by El Gol, Daily Mail claim that N’Zonzi has got a release clause of 32.5million pounds ($43.4million).
This season, the Les Bleus player featured in 16 games for Sevilla before getting kicked out of the team. He has not played a single game since he featured against Liverpool in the Champions League last month.

Yesterday, we covered a report (via El Gol) claiming that the Gunners seem to have agreed the signing of Sevilla star Steven N’Zonzi, who has a release clause of 40 million euros ($47million) in his contract.
The 28-year-old star has been effective for the La Liga club since joining them in 2015 and last month, he made his senior international debut for France.
Also Read: Arsenal Will Offer around $400,000-a-week to Agree Star Deal
The question is, how will Arsene Wenger use him in his starting XI?
The French boss has already got two quality defensive midfielders in the form of Granit Xhaka and Francis Coquelin. At the moment, the Swiss international is the preferred man for the starting team.
If N’Zonzi arrives, that too for $47million, then it will be baffling to see him out of the starting XI. Therefore, we expect him to replace Xhaka to start with Ramsey in the center of the park.
Arsene Wenger must strengthen his team in the winter transfer window and French international Steven N’Zonzi has been linked with a move to the Emirates.
The 28-year-old midfielder has not played a game for Sevilla since their contest against Liverpool in the Champions League and reports suggest that he is not preferred by the manager.
If reports in the media are anything to go by then Arsenal seems to be close to signing the Les Bleus star.
According to El Gol, there is a great possibility that N’Zonzi, who has a release clause of 40 million euros in his contract ($47million), will depart the La Liga club in the winter transfer window.
The Spanish source have mentioned that Arsenal seems to have agreed the transfer for 37 million euros plus 3 million euros in add-ons, which would meet Sevilla’s demand.
Steven is naturally a defensive midfielder and Arsenal already have the likes of Xhaka and Coquelin, who can perform in the DM role effectively. This season, N’Zonzi has featured in 16 games in all competitions for the Spanish side (0 goals and 0 assists). In your opinion, do Arsenal really need to sign him?

The Reds failed to sign a center half in the summer transfer window and therefore, they have suffered big time.
Virgil van Dijk was the main center back linked with a move to Anfield in the summer but as per the latest reports going on in the media, a new name is in the lime light.
According to Daily Mail, Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona have made inquiries to hire the services of French international and Sevilla star Clement Lenglet.
The 22-year-old defender featured for 90 minutes against the Merseysiders in a contest that ended 3-3 last week. The young center half has not only impressed in the defensive third but also in the attacking third.
This season, Clement has netted twice in twelve La Liga appearances for Sevilla. As per the provided Daily Mail link, the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City are also interested in the Les Bleus defender, who has a release clause of 28 million pounds ($37million) in his contract.
Klopp should push to secure his signature to reinforce the back line and solve the defensive dilemma that he has been facing since joining the Anfield club.

Next up, the Merseysiders will collide against Sevilla away from home in the Champions League.
The Reds dominated the Spanish side at Anfield in the opening group game of the competition but could only earn a single point. Now, they need at least a point to maintain their top spot in the group.
As far as Klopp’s team news is concerned, the German manager may make a few changes to the team that faced the Saints. Not to forget, next weekend, Liverpool will host reigning PL champions Chelsea.
Adam Lallana has recovered from his thigh concern and he could get the nod to start his first game of the season vs the La Liga club. The England international could partner the likes of Can and Coutinho in the midfield.
Gomez was impressive for England during the international break and he should return to the starting XI in place of Trent. Karius is expected to replace Mignolet in the goal.
Here is Liverpool’s strongest possible 4-3-3 XI vs Sevilla.
As far as Klopp’s team news is concerned, star playmaker Philippe Coutinho should finally return to the Liverpool first team after taking part in the pre-season fixtures.
To include the Brazilian in the starting XI, the German manager should make a slight change in his usual 4-3-3 formation. Klopp should use a 4-2-3-1 formation and Coutinho must play in the attacking third in the No.10 role behind compatriot Firmino. Mane and Salah will likely start on the wings again.
Karius should return in place of Mignolet in the goal. As far as the defense is concerned, the likes of Gomez, Lovren and Robertson should return to the starting XI as well.
