Earlier in the day, Ukrainians lost their second game in succession and this time around Northern Ireland defeated them 2-0.
As far as the World Champions are concerned, it will be fair to say that Joachim Low’s team were lucky to earn a point against Poland.
Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik missed two glorious opportunities to give his side the lead in the second half. Both sides have 4 points now and the Germans only lead the group on goal difference.
The video highlights of the game are provided below.

Date: Thursday, 16th June, 2016
Time: 17.00pm BST
Venue: Parc Olympique Lyonnais, Lyon
The only second group stage fixture that will feature two teams whom both lost their opening game sees Northern Ireland and Ukraine clash in Lyon on Thursday.
Ukraine saw their goal pummelled by World Champions Germany but only going down 2-0 in a stoppage time counter-attack.
Making their European Championship debut, Northern Ireland offered very little threat in their 1-0 defeat to Poland but they did keep Robert Lewandowski quiet to give their defence some confidence ahead of their second game.
Neither of these sides are expected to make much of an impact in this group and either will do well to qualify as a third place team. Qualifying was a proud enough achievement for little Northern Ireland whilst Ukraine’s squad doesn’t look much stronger, however the bookmakers fancy a Ukraine win here.
Yevhen Konoplyanka saw an effort cleared off the line by Jerome Boateng although it looked like his close-range effort may have been a cross or mishit. Manuel Neuer was forced into a couple of smart saves also.
Aside from the Sevilla man, Andriy Yarmolenko is another attacking talent for the Ukraine side that generally lacks many stars – 18 of them playing domestically. Striker Roman Zozulya didn’t offer much in attack and has a poor record at international level also.
Northern Ireland didn’t force a single save out of Wojciech Szczesny in their first game. All they offered was a clever free kick that Steven Davis failed to connect with and a heavy first touch from Conor Washington preventing the Queens Park Rangers striker getting a one-on-one.
Michael O’Neill switched from four at the back to three and wingbacks at half-time in their opener and they weren’t camped in their own half as often for the second 45 minutes. Expect similar in their second game as they need to win to have a prayer of making it through to the second round.
Whilst most of the Northern Ireland squad is based in the English league system, most are with clubs below the Premier League. They rely on striker Kyle Lafferty for goals as well as set pieces. Germany’s opening goal versus Ukraine did come from an indirect free kick.

Ukraine v Northern Ireland Odds

Ukraine vs Northern Ireland: Team News

Ukraine Team News
Mykhaylo Fomenko has his full squad to pick from. Yevhen Konoplyanka was the only player to pick up a yellow card in their group opener.
Northern Ireland Team News
Craig Cathcart should be good to start a second game in a week. The defender was the only player to pick up a yellow card versus Poland. It will be interesting to see if Michael O’Neill will go with the defensive side that started the first game or continue with Stuart Dallas ahead of Paddy McNair as they did in the second half; more adventurous.

Possible Starting Lineups

Ukraine predicted XI: Andriy Pyatov; Artem Fedetskyi, Yevhen Khacheridi, Yaroslav Rakitskiy, Vyacheslav Shevchuk; Serhiy Sydorchuk, Taras Stepanenko, Andriy Yarmolenko, Viktor Kovalenko, Yevhen Konoplyanka; Roman Zozulya
Northern predicted XI: Michael McGovern; Jonny Evans, Gareth McAuley, Craig Cathcart; Conor McLaughlin, Steven Davis, Chris Baird, Oliver Norwood, Stuart Dallas; Kyle Lafferty, Conor Washington

Key Stats

1 – Northern Ireland’s defeat was Poland’s first-ever win at a European Championship in seven attempts.
6 – Northern Ireland have failed to win their last six matches at major tournaments (D2 L4).
112 – Toni Kroos completed 112 passes versus Ukraine in their opening game – five more than Ukraine’s top three passers combined.
Prediction: Ukraine 1-0 Northern Ireland
Goals from Mustafi and Schweinsteiger were enough to earn all three points for the tournament favorites. However, Ukraine had their moments and troubled the German defense, mainly in the first half.
Brilliant performances from Boateng and Neuer ensured that Germany kept clean sheet on the night.
Both goals were scored thanks to wonder balls provided by Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil respectively. The Arsenal star had a quiet first half but looked sharper as the game wore on and in the end, he brilliantly set up Schweni’s goal.
Here are the highlights of the game provided below.
Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny has had a brilliant season for the gunners thus far but was arguably the flop of the game for France last night.
Not only did he gifted a silly penalty to Ukraine but also got sent off to add more pain to already disjointed French squad who could not make anything happen.
Their best player Frank Ribery had few moments where he troubled the home side but still failed to test their goalie.
France now have an absolute mountain to climb in the second leg. Can they overcome the deficit, we shall see. If not, it will be the first time France will fail to qualify for the FIFA World Cup since 1994.
Here is the image of current and former Arsenal stars Giroud and Nasri (now plays for Manchester City) in disbelief and shock because of their horrific performance last night.

At Wembley on Wednesday night, England had to settle for a point against Ukraine in Group H, after Frank Lampard’s late penalty salvaged a 1-1 draw at Wembley. This draw put Roy Hodgson’s side level on four points with Poland and Montenegro. However, although drawing one game to Ukraine, a decent side, isn’t a travesty; It showed cracks.
Although England, at times, kept the ball well, every England player, bar a few, seemed uneasy in possession. Some may put it down to nerves, but even experienced players in the England team did it. As well as England appearing to be uneasy in possession, instead of playing passes comfortably to their team-mates feet like Ukraine did with ease, they played the pass into the vague direction they thought a player would be, or in the vague direction of a player they were attempting to pass to. It doesn’t help, either, that when the English players did move for the ball, it wasn’t before their team-mate had recieved the pass, but it was only as their team-mate was looking for a pass.
The reason that after a few passes the English centre-backs had to resort to kicking it upfield is because there was very little movement between Hodgson’s strict formation, and when there was movement, it wasn’t so that their team-mate already had a pass when they recieved it, but when a team-mate had to wait for a pass.
It says something about England going forward against Ukraine that their biggest threat was the right-back Glen Johnson cutting in on his weaker foot! However, with the introduction of Welbeck and Sturridge there was a bit move movement in the front lines, it was just a pity Welbeck couldn’t seem to hit a barn door that night, although he did earn the penalty.
I believe, the main reason that England are so long ball orientated, and uneasy in possession is because of the English youth systems. I know, you have probably seen this a thousand times before, but it is remains true: In Spain, as well as countries like Japan (who have a superb youth system,) the teenagers there don’t begin to even think about playing on full size pitches until the are at least 16. Therefore, instead of jumping up to full size pitches at the young age of 12-ish in this country, they play on smaller pitches with seven aside. This develops players’ technique dramatically as they have to learn to play in tight spaces, and they get more of the ball.
Although the English FA are looking to follow in the footsteps of countries like Spain and Japan, the FA have been yet to show any real intent on emulating the reigning World Cup and European Cup winners. Even Jack Wilshere, a supremely talented technical player, was schooled under Arsene Wenger.
The lesson to be learnt from our national team is to stop the ‘GET RID’ shout thrown about every Sunday morning, and try and make England’s focus on developing technically talented players, rather than strong, quick players, who will excel as teens playing on massive pitches.
Although late, the changes made by the English FA are the first step towards progression in this country, but they must be accompanied by a change in culture and mentality. England’s youngsters must be taught that technique is vital and possession is king, rather than the best player being the one with the longest kick, or the strongest physique. Winning should not be considered everything, developing as players will then mean they can go onto win. Only then will England eventually develop a national side capable of competing with the very best, but it could take time.
