Brendan Rodgers finally tasted the first premier league victory with Liverpool as the reds dismantled struggling Norwich at Carrow road. Uruguayan strker, Luis Suarez scored yet another hat-trick at Carrow Road leaving Chris Hughton’s side still without a win this season.
Luis Suarez gave the lead for visitors just inside 67 seconds after the start then scored the second just before half time to make it 2-0. Uruguayan, then completed the hat-trick within 12 minutes of the restart and also assisted Turkish Midfielder, Nuri Sahin to register his first premier league goal. Steve Morison and Grant Holt scored consolations for canaries on either sides of Gerrard’s deflected free-kick.
Luis Suarez scored his second hat-trick in two consecutive visits at Carrow road, but his contribution on the day was not just limited with the goals. He tormented Norwich’s defense all day and created chance after chance against them.
Hughton just made a single change in his starting line-up from last week outing, where Wes Hoolahan gave the way for Simeon Jackson, while Rodgers made three changes from the team which lost against Manchester United last weekend. Nuri Sahin and Suso were recalled to play in the place of suspended Jonjo Shelvey and ineffective Fabio Borini and Andre Wisdom made his first premier league debut in the place of injured, Martin Kelly at right back.
It was the visitors who got off to the perfect start, and they scored their first goal inside 67 seconds on their first attempt on goal. The ball found Suarez after the intervention from Michael Turner just near the edge of the penalty box and the Uruguayan made an excellent finish to find the left bottom corner of the goal after the smart first touch.
In the 8th minute of the game, Norwich had their first chance of the game to score but Reina made a fine save off long range Jackson’s effort. 14 minutes later, Luis Suarez was denied a penalty, where video replays clearly showed Barnett’s challenge on the Uruguayan striker was harsh.
It was Jackson, once again who missed a golden opportunity to score on a volley inside the penalty box on 30 minutes, but his shot went well over the bar. On 38 minutes, Luis Suarez doubled the lead for visitors by collecting the ball from Turner and bent into the fine finish, just after missing one-on-one moments with Ruddy earlier.
Norwich should have easily pulled one back within a minute of the restart, where Andrew Surman’s shot on goal was scooped over the bar by his own team mate, Robert Snodgrass. A minute later, Norwich had paid for their wasted chance. Suarez’s pass to Sterling inside the penalty box was blocked by Barnett, but the block was not quite enough to go beyond Suarez. This time, it was Sahin, who stood in the perfect position to collect Suarez’s ball and his left foot shot had found the nets to treble the lead of visitors.
10 minutes after Sahin’s first premier league goal, it was about to Suarez to celebrate his second hat-trick at Carrow Road. Collecting the ball from Sahin near the left edge of the penalty box, he cut the ball to his right and delivered a fine shot to reach the right corner of the goal.
On an hour mark, Morison did pull one back for the hosts as Reina failed to hold Snodgrass’s strike. The bounced ball from Reina’s hand found Morison and the Wales striker finished it off excellently with a fine half volley.
8 minutes later, Liverpool restored their 4-goal lead as their captain scored from the deflected long range effort. Sterling’s low ball had found Gerrard outside the penalty box and the captain’s strike on goal was heavily deflected to find the nets. In the 72nd minute, Suarez should have added the 6th for the visitors, but his shot had found the post.
Liverpool dominated the possession for the remainder of match, but it was Grant Holt who took advantage on Skrtel’s miscue and his last shot on target made the scoreline 2-5.
Top of the match: Luis Suarez
Flop of the match: Simeon Jackson

Gaining just a point in the opening three games of the new season has certainly increased the pressure on Liverpool’s new boss, Brendon Rodgers and has pulled his side to post a compulsory victory at stadium of lights. At the same time, after two consecutive draws, one against Arsenal at home and the other to Swansea at away, Martin O’Neill’sSunderlandwill be looking for their first win of the season at home.
Despite coming up with influential performances in the opening games, Liverpool strikers have been continuously struggling to find the net. The failure to find replacement for the departed expensive striker, Andy Carroll seems to be the major mistake committed by Rodgers / FSG.
Signings Joe Allen and Nuri Sahin to Anfield and Adam Johnson and Steven Fletcher to Stadium of light have been brilliant pieces of business done in the transfer window by the managers of Liverpool and Sunderland respectively. Allen’s pass accuracy with the Merseyside club is fantastic, more than 90% and that earned him Standard Chattered player of the month award for August, whereas Fletcher scored 2 goals in his debut game for Sunderland against Swansea, 2 weeks ago.
As Wes Brown is sidelined with knee injury and Phil Bradley is encountering ankle problem, this defensive pair will not be the part of the fixture thus by leaving the space for Cuellar and Gardner to carry on their duty at back.
The new arrivals, Adam Johnson and Luis Saha are expected to keep their places in the starting line-up to be operated as left winger and centre striker respectively. There is no doubt in Fletcher’s place in the starting XI as the former Wolves striker had netted twice in the 2-2 draw againstSwansea.
Despite showing some poor performances in the previous games, Pepe Reina is set to keep his place in goal, whereas, former Aston Villa winger, Stewart Downing will probably be getting his chance to play in the right wing in the place of inefficient Fabio Borini to join the attack with Sterling, who will be playing in the left wing and Luis Striker, the centre striker.
Gerrard, Sahin and Allen will be forming the part of the visitor’s midfield as Lucas Leiva remains as a long-term absentee. If Enrique fails to prove his fitness for the game, then Sebastian Coates or Stewart Downing will be given the role to play in left back as the later proved to be effective in the position in the europa league playoffs against Hearts.
As both the teams will be fighting to find their first victory of the season, we can watch out for plenty of excitement and expectations.
Expected line-ups:
Sunderland:
Mignolet, Gardner, O’Shea, Cuellar, Rose, Larsson, Sessegnon, Cattermole, A. Johnson, Saha, Fletcher
Liverpool:
Reina. G. Johnson. Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Allen. Sahin, Gerrard, Downing,Sterling, Suarez

New comers, Robin Van Persie and Shinji Kagawa scored for Manchester United on their home debuts as red devils worked hard to earn their first victory of the season with a 3-2 win against the cottagers.
Duff gave surprise lead to the visitors within 3 minutes of the start from cleverly taken free-kick by Ruiz, but the stunning half-volley from the former Arsenal striker, Van Persie and close range finishes from Kagawa and Rafael had put the home side on commanding position at the end of first half. Vidic’s own goal in the middle of second half was not enough for Fulham to earn points at Old Trafford.
Alex Ferguson made 4 changes in his team which started against Everton on last Monday. Rafael’s return gave the opportunity for Valencia to play in his favorite right wing;Anderson made his return to play in the centre of midfield for Scholes; Young was opted to play ahead of Nani and the impressive Rooney was replaced by Van Persie. Carrick was given the role to play in the heart of defense with Vidic, once again.
Whereas, visiting manager Martin Jol made just one change in his team by replacing injured Norway defender, John Arne Riise with 21-year old, Mathew Briggs in the left back.US attacker, Clint Dempsey who was strongly linked with a move toLiverpool did not featured for Fulham once again.
After the defeat against Toffees, red devils were doubtlessly in need of the winning result, but what had happened in the initial minutes of the game was definitely not the part of their script. Petric’s clever run outside the left corner of the box led the way for new defender, Carrick to make a needless foul on him. It was Bryan Ruiz who stepped up to take the free-kick. His clever low delivery found Duff and the Irish man provided the shock lead for visitors inside 3 minutes on clock.
Thinking to defend their early lead, Fulham played with defensive mind-set with most of their players packed on the back. The hosts continued to push forward to find the equalizer and it was no surprise that they found the equalizer in the 12th minute of the game. Though it was a not so decent cross from Evra to find Van Persie, the Dutchman came up with an excellent half-volley with his favored left-foot to find the right corner of net. After that strike, the hosts were trying to find their original attacking pace at Old Trafford, but at the same point of time, Fulham were growing and tightening themselves up to deny the hosts to score.
In the 25th minute of the game, Briggs’ ended in a poor pass which led to United’s counter-attack, heavily orchestrated by Kagawa. Kagawa found Young near the left corner of the box and the English winger hopelessly shoot it well over the top of the bar.
In the 35th minute of the game, visitors might have thought that they have done well enough to clear Van Persie’s corner; but the clearance directly found Cleverley in the edge of the box and it was Cleverly who shot towards the goal. Though Fulham keeper, Schwarzer done well to stop the thunderous shot, he failed to hold the ball with him and Kagawa made the bounced ball to find the net to provide the lead for the hosts.

Though it was a piece of luck for the home side to take the lead, the manner which they capitalized on it underlined their efficiency. 6 minutes of their second goal, Ashley Young’s brilliant ball from the left corner of the box found Rafael and the Brazlian’s perfectly headed to find the net to make the scoreline as 3-1 in favor of the hosts.
The second half went underway with Fulham looking very dangerous as they made crucial runs near the box especially in the opening 15 mins of the restart. An unexpected lucky goal for Fulham brought them into the game. A hopeless cross from Petric from left side tempted De Gea to provide a needless punch on the ball. The confusion between De Gea and Vidic paved the way for an own goal in helping Fulham to reduce the deficit. After the own goal, Fulham looked more energetic and pressed to attack.
In the 70th minute of the game, it was Dembele who made the fine run towards the goal and the Belgian found his thunderous shot saved by De Gea. By this time, Welbeck and Rooney came into the field in the place of Young and Kagawa. The hosts hadn’t came up with such noticeable attacks in the last 20 mins of the game and it seemed to be they would have surrendered two points to the cottagers in the dying minutes of the game, as De Gea made plenty of good saves.
Despite earning two points, it was not so good news for Red Devils as Rooney was caught late by Rodallega in the dying moments of the game, with the striker stretchered off.

Steve Clarke made a perfect start as West Brom manager with the emphatic 3-0 win over Liverpool at Hawthrons on the opening day of new premier league season. Liverpool played with 10-men for the last half an hour after Daniel Agger was sent off for the challenge against Shane Long.
Liverpool seemed to be the better side among the two teams in the first half before Zlaton Gera’s wonderful goal in the 43rd minute. Despite of saving Long’s penalty in the second half, Reina failed to stop Odemwingie’s penalty and Lukaku’s header as Rodgers had a miserable start Liverpool manager.
Only one of the new signings, Claudio Yacob started for the baggies where two new signings with the names of Fabio Borini and Joe Allen were named in the starting line-up for the reds. Joe Allen was positioned to play in the deep of the midfield along with Lucas, whereas Fabio Borini partnered Luis Suarez in the attack.
The match started in the lively fashion and counter attacks were going on both sides. It was Luis Suarez who had the first opportunity to score in the game in the counter-attack. His shot from outside the left corner of the box was saved byWest Brom’s keeper, Ben Foster. Few minutes later, Long was fouled near the edge of the box and Reid wasted a free-kick by hitting a long way away from the bar.
In the 22nd minute of the game, Suarez cut inside the penalty box in the left hand side and provided Gerrard with the ball to fire towards the goal. But West Brom’s debutant, Yacob was in the right place to block Gerrard’s shot. 4 minutes later, Borini flicked the ball to Suarez inside the left corner of the penalty box, but Suarez can find only side netting.
Johnson’s clearance in the 43rd minute during the counter attack of baggies, awarded them a corner. It was Reid who took that corner and it was Johnson, once again with a clearance with a header. Johnson’s clearance foundGera and the Hungarian gave the lead for the home side with a perfectly executed half-volley.
Within 15 minutes of the restart, Liverpool were down to 10-men as Daniel Agger was shown the direct red card for his backward challenge against Irish striker, Shane Long inside the penalty box, letting the chance for West Brom to double their penalty. But, Pepe Reina did well in stopping the casually taken effortless penalty by Long. As Agger being sent off, Rodgers took an immediate action by replacing Downing with Carragher, who made 701st appearance for the club yesterday.
Three minutes later, Long made amends as he won another penalty, this time being brought down by Martin Skrtel. But this time it was Odemwingie who took the penalty and his perfectly executed penalty doubled the lead for the home side.
Another brilliant counter attack from baggies came on the 70th minute of the game, where Yacob found Lukaku in the centre of the pitch. The young Belgian striker reacted well to take the ball inside the penalty box. Instead of going for a shot towards the goal, he fed the ball to James Morrison, but the midfielder skied the ball from 12 yards out.
However in the 77th minute, Ridgewell chip was perfectly headed by Lukaku to send it to the nets to triple the lead for the home side.Liverpool was pushing themselves forward to find a consolation goal, but it didn’t happen even after the introduction of unwanted, Andy Carroll as the baggies wrapped up an emphatic 3-0 win over the reds.
The defending Europe and World Champions Spain will take on Italy.
Both finalists started the tournament against each other as the opening fixture ended in 1-1 draw where Di Natale’s top class finish was canceled out by Fabregas’s goal. Remarkably that is the only goal Spain have conceded in the competition thus far.
It is expected that Del Bosque will be making only a single change in the team which started the semi-final clash against Portugal last Wednesday. Sevilla striker, Alvaro Negredo is likely to be replaced by Barcelona midfielder, Cesc Fabregas. On the other side, Cesare Prandelli will be most probably going with the same line-up which started in the encounter against Germany in the semi final.

Spain Attack vs Italy Defense
Italy played the first two games of the tournament with 3-5-2 formation. De Rossi was by far Man of the Match against Spain as he played in the heart of defense and broke their play. Bonucci was used as the right back and Chiellini left back. Pirlo and Marchisio were opted to play in the deep of the midfield where Maggio and Giacherrini were playing in the right and left wings of the 5 men midfield, respectively.
As 4-4-2 formation was introduced in the final group match against Ireland, De Rossi was operated from his favourite defensive midfield and Juventus pair, Chiellini and Barzagli formed the heart of the defense, where Balzeritti and Abate played in the left and right backs respectively. As Chiellini was in the injury list of players for the quarter-final game against England, Bonucci returned to the starting line-up to form pair with his Juventus team-mate, Barzagli. As Abate was unavailable and Maggio was suspended for the semi-final clash against Germany, Balzeritti was shifted to the right back from his favourite left back position. Chiellini played as left back in his return in the semi-finals. Pirlo was working from the deep of the midfield in the knock out stages.
Abate and Maggio will be available for the finals, Balzeritti is expected to play in the right back due to his influential performance against Germans in the semi-finals.
Coming to Spain, for the semi-final clash against Portugal, Vicente del Bosque made a single change from his team which started the quarter-final game against France. Sevilla Striker, Alvaro Negredo was brought in the place of Barcelona Midfielder, Cesc Fabregas who has been playing as false No. 9 in the tournament. And Fabregas is expected to return to the starting line-up for the clash with Italian the final as Negredo put up a horrifying performance. Apart from the No. 9 position,Spain has been starting all the games of the tournament with the same remaining 10.
Spaniards are known for their passing abilities. The no. of passes completed by them is more than any other team in the tournament. The absence of injured David Villa is severely felt in the Spanish side as the forwards have not been able to take full advatange of the opportunities midfield created for them.
In the first game where Italy faced Spain in the group stages, Silva provided an excellent assist to Fabregas to level the score. Silva passed the ball in between De Rossi and Chiellini; As Maggio failed to mark Fabregas, the Barcelona man ran in the gap between Maggio and De Rossi and scored. Italian defenders should come up with bright display in order to avoid those errors in marking the attackers.
As De Rossi has been playing in the left wing, he will be marking Xavi Hernandez who is opted to play on the right flank. As De Rossi is known for producing excellent tackles, Xavi will be facing a tough task to go beyond the Roman midfielder. As the 3 of back 4 has been playing for the same club, the co-ordination between them will be more. Barzagli will be marking Fabregas and Bonucci will be mapping Silva.
Alba, who came in the team for ageing Capdevilla has been producing considerably more threats to the opponents. His noticeable remarkable run was that he made against France, where he put up an excellent through ball to Alonso in which the Real Madrid midfielder scored with the header. Arbeloa is perhaps the weakest link in Spanish’s defense throughout the tournament with majority of the teams troubled Spain from the left.
Italy Attack vs Spain Defense
In World Cup 2010, Sergio Ramos played as right back, Puyol and Pique stood in the heart of the defense and capdevilla in the left back. Due to Puyol’s injury, Ramos who almost played all the matches as CB last season for Real Madrid has pulled to play in the heart of the defense by Del Bosque and thereby letting the way for Arbeloa to play as right back. Might be considering the ageing factor, Del Bosque opted influential Valencia’s left back Jodi Alba ahead of Capdevilla to play as a part of the spanish defense.
Sergio Busquets was brought in to the team for World Cup 2010 for the defensive midfield role in the place of Marcos Senna. The 23-year old Barcelona midfielder was continuously delivering valuable goods for his country, since making his first appearance in 2010.
In the opening two matches Pirlo and Marchisio were playing in the deep of the midfield in Prandelli’s 3-5-2 formation. But the introduction of 4-4-2 formation in the game against Ireland, made Marchisio to play in the right side of the midfield, leaving Pirlo alone in the deep of the midfield.
As Motta was in the injury list of players for the game against England, Montolivo was given the opportunity to make his first start in the tournament. Though Montolivo has been playing in the right side of the midfield for his club, he was made to play in the play-maker role i.e., behind the strikers. But, despite of playing in the unfavorable position, Montolivo provided the considerably appreciable performance in the quarter-final game. He ran in the crucial gaps and kept the ball moving. Due to his excellent performance, Montolivo was given another opportunity to start the semi-final against Germany despite of Motta being available.
Balotelli didn’t make a big impact in the first two opening games, But, he scored in a spectacular fashion with the beautiful bi-cycle kick in the last group match against Ireland, coming as a substitute. Balotelli started the quarter-final and semi-final game. In the semi-finals, he scored a brace in the first half to lead his side to the victory. The second goal he scored was an absolute cracker where he fired the shot from outside the box with such pace that left Neuer no time to react.
Pirlo, who was the man of the match in both the knock out games in the tournament for Italy, has delivering the goods brilliantly. The former Fiorentina midfielder ahead of Pirlo runs through the crucial gaps and has functioned well. Cassano was brilliant in running back and forth, shooting towards the goal and in the passing abilities. Marchisio looks settled in the right side of the midfield. But this time, the Juventus midfielder will be experiencing some sorts of trouble from Xabi Alonso and Alba.
Conclusion
The winner of 2010 World Cup will be battling the winner of 2006 World Cup for the Euro crown. Having lost to Spain in the quarter-final stage of Euro 2008, Italians will be looking for revenge and win their second championship. The reigning champions Spain remain favorite and will look to become the first team ever to retain the European Championship title.

Portugal survived the group of death and managed to reach semi finals of Euro 2012 by edging out Czech Republic in quarter-finals with the only goal from Ronaldo in the 78th minute of the game. Spain the defending Europe and world champions topped the group with 2 wins and a draw. Spain entered the semis by beating France 2-0 in the quarter-finals as Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso scored a brace.
Del Bosque’s Spain will probably be going with the same starting line-up started against France in quarter-finals with Cesc Fabregas playing in the central portion of the attack as False No.9 along side, David Silva and Andres Iniesta; whereas Bento’s Portugal will be replacing the injured Zaragoza striker Postiga with Besiktas’s Almeida in their starting XI.
Portugal Attack vs Spain Defense
In World Cup 2010, Sergio Ramos played as right back, Puyol and Pique as CBs and Capervilla left back. Due to Puyol’s injury, Ramos who played almost all the matches as CB last season for Real Madrid, has been opted to perform that job for his country by Del Bosque and thereby letting the way for Arbeloa to play as right back. The ever consistent Jordi Alba will be starting at left back.
As Ronaldo has been playing on the left flank in the tournament, an uphill task waits for Arbeloa to stop his Real Madrid team-mate. Arbeloa did a decent job stopping pacy Ribery with support of his team mates in the quarters. The in-form Portuguese captain can cause severe damage to the opponents with his pace and trickery. On the right flank, Nani’s pace is considered as a real threat and Alba should provide his best to stop him. Almeida is likely to replace the injured Postiga. Almeida had enjoyed a great last season with Besiktas and he needs to come up with a clever display to go through the spaces of spain’s tight defense that has conceded single goal all tournament. Veloso, Moutinho and Meireles have been consistent and that is one of the main reason behind Portugal’s success in this competition.
Postiga is the only man who survived from Portuguese Euro 2004 squad alongside Ronaldo. In terms of quality, Postiga and Almeida are not much different. Almeida will be taking his place as lone striker up front for Portugal and needs to step up big time in the absence of senior striker Postiga.
Spain Attack vs Portuguese Defense
Fabregas started the opening game of Spain against Italy instead of a striker. But, Torres was given two consecutive opportunities to start the next games against Republic of Ireland and Croatia. Torres failed to shine in the last group fixture and Del Bosque opted to start Fabregas again in the quarters.
Real Madrid pair in the Portuguese defense Coentrao and Pepe have been looking good so far in the tournament. David Silva is top quality player and will face stiff opposition from a top quality defender in Coentrao. On the other hand, there is the major threat of Iniesta who constantly change positions and combining with Xavi create havoc for opposition. Xabi Alonso was the man of the match against France and he should be stopped from delivering those accurate long range passes.
Midfield Analysis
Spain’s ball possession in all the matches has been more than 50 percent still it seems like Spain are not the best team when it comes to counter attack as they lack pace to carry the ball through. Midfield has been serving as the power house for Spain in the recent years with the likes of Xavi, Iniesta Alonso and Busquets. The number of passes completed by Spaniards are more than any other team in the tournament so far and that is mainly due to their brilliant midfield.
Coming to Portugal, Raul Meireles who won last season Champions league with Chelsea hardly had good games for Chelsea but is delivering for his nation. Moutinho will be looking to replicate his quarter final man of the match display against Spain as well. Adding to that his coordination with Genoa’s Veloso can be the difference in dominating midfield battle or losing it.
Conclusion
Having lost to Spain 2 years back in the World Cup, Portugal will be looking for revenge and will want their influential captain Ronaldo to come up with the goods to ensure their progress in the final. On the other hand, reigning champions Spain will look to continue their domination so as to retain the title. We can expect that the game will be an attacking battle and unlike the quarter final between Italy and England.
