Marouane Fellaini’s recent admission may upset Everton supporters, but is likely to be understood. The lofty Belgian wishes to finish his Everton career this season. Once described as an ‘untouchable’ – not for sale at any price – by Bill Kenwright, the thought of losing Fellaini will dishearten David Moyes.
Undoubtedly, the manager is determined to keep the stars, but also graciously acknowledges a player’s aspiration to shoot for them (e.g. Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar). Pienaar, to the Toffees’ delight, has returned permanently, but the South African is set to be the only survivor of Everton’s wonderful midfield quadruplet, which also featured Tim Cahill, by season’s end. Arguably, if materialised, Fellaini’s departure will cut deepest.
Signed for £15million from Standard Liège, Everton’s present transfer record, Fellaini displayed immediate versatility and physicality. Competent as a secondary striker and influential as a defensive midfielder, the youngster deservedly earned Everton’s 2008-09 Young Player of the Season accolade. However, Fellaini was rather clumsy, earning daft yellow cards as if they were collectibles. Nevertheless, Fellaini quickly became a fan favourite, partly because of the excessive hairstyle. More significantly, David Moyes appeared to pull yet another ace from the transfer market.
Indeed, Fellaini became an integral cog to the Everton machine. Deeply positioned, he enabled the likes of Cahill, Pienaar and Arteta to venture, which paid great, and essential, dividends. For instance, the realisation of striker depletion was often clouded by Cahill’s goal return. Moreover, Fellaini aided the defence with sheer strength and hustle.

Nowadays, Fellaini is, debatably, of greater importance. Increasingly tidy with the ball, the Belgian’s blossoming technique was demonstrated masterfully against Manchester United during the opening fixture of the current campaign. With a goal to add, Fellaini was head-and-shoulders above the other twenty-one players on the pitch. Consequently, discussion exploded over Fellaini’s potential to play for a bigger team.
David Moyes shares confidence in Fellaini’s ability to reach the dizzy heights of an elite club. However, the central midfielder’s actual desire to seek greener pastures will be displeasing. Unquestionably, bigger clubs have been alerted, but Moyes won’t accept any old offer, especially since Fellaini signed a new contract last year. A hard bargain will be driven for the hard man.

After witnessing Manchester City snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, and thus snatch the Premier League trophy from the hands of Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United aim to reinstate their dominance.
This summer, the Red Devils have responded to Roberto Mancini’s lavish, albeit successful, spending policy of yesteryear with their own individual splurge. United fans demanded team investment following a discomforting trophy-less season. Not unheard, Manchester United acted swiftly to secure the savvy Shinji Kagawa and propitious Nick Powell.

However, despite grand satisfaction with both, the general supportive consensus continues to scream for an established central midfielder. In fact, such screaming started seasons ago. Almost shut up by Wesley Sneijder, or perhaps Luka Modrić, but the noise may continue following the club’s neglect to rectify the perceived problem. Alternatively, Manchester United just acquired two new strikers. One striker is Ángelo Henríquez – an 18-year-old Chilean, possibly to become a loanee. The other is the explosive Robin van Persie. Undoubtedly, the latter deal has caused the symptom of excitable giddiness amongst the United faithful. Indeed, a luxurious signing, but a signing complementary of Manchester United’s attacking ambition.

Manchester United’s whole brand is founded on attractive, attacking football. Famous from the Busby era, the club’s ideal is to stride forward. Throughout Ferguson’s lengthy reign, evidence appears with the renovation of a deadly strike force (e.g. Yorke-Cole-Sheringham-Solskjær, circa 1999 and Tévez-Rooney-Ronaldo, circa 2008). With the season’s inauguration rapidly approaching, Manchester United can boast another potent frontline.
A talented quartet involving Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Javier Hernández and Robin van Persie presents Sir Alex with a selection headache. Advantageously, each striker offers their own unique style: conductor, sprinter, poacher and clinical finisher. Depending on the situation (e.g. opponent or a pending loss), the manager can manipulate the forward setup to achieve a positive result. Hence, tactics and ideas vary, which creates confusion amongst rival defenders, especially if stamina diminishes. Typically at Old Trafford, the Red Devils score in the wee small minutes. Expect such a scenario to continue by a team, which idolises attacking drama and possesses greater options.
Onto the midfield dispute, general aggravation is understandable. By looking across Manchester, two players dressed in sky blue are Yaya Touré and David Silva. The belief is that Manchester United lack suitable competitors to the few exceptionally gifted midfielders. As the tedious cliché states, “The midfield battle is where the game is won or lost.” Nevertheless, Manchester United’s current squad includes players capable of dictation. Amongst supporters, the overwhelming majority laud Carrick’s ability and encourage the promising evolution of Tom Cleverley. Plus, another year of Paul Scholes is a welcoming treat.

Sir Alex Ferguson is preaching to the understood Manchester United motto, which is “Attack, Attack, Attack!” By signing Robin van Persie, the manager is increasing the prosperity of the striker department. Accompanied by Kagawa and the speed trio of Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, Manchester United’s offense will be difficult to suppress. Ultimately, goals win games. Beware rivals.

In the wake of Robin van Persie’s ‘betrayal’, the announcement of Laurent Koscielny’s new contract is nothing short of a blessing for Arsenal. Last season, the wiry Frenchman was one of the Premier League’s most improved players. Indeed, he’s an integral member of the Gunners’ backline, especially due to the lack of depth in the area. So impressive was Koscielny’s defending, the mighty FC Barcelona stood up and noticed.
What if the Catalans pursued the ex-Lorient player similarly to Cesc Fàbregas? Admittedly, Koscielny is not a former La Masia product, and so Barcelona’s craving was never to be as strong. Nonetheless, once Barça come knocking, a club that seemingly guarantees trophies, it is likely a player would desire the ‘dream move’ to the glorious Camp Nou. However, Koscielny has other plans. To dismiss such interest, and positively sign fresh paperwork with the Gunners, shows great loyalty from the defender, who supposedly has the wish to enter the Arsenal Hall of Fame.

Following those who departed the Emirates unceremoniously, reeking of dissent, Koscielny’s confidence with Arsenal is a huge relief to Arsène Wenger. Last year, a seismic player exodus buried the club in a heap of rubble. Wenger, Le Professeur, faced intense pressure before Robin van Persie, most noticeably, dragged Arsenal to Champions League qualification. From apparent hero to villain, many today perceive the Dutchman as the detonator-button-presser to Arsenal’s rebuilding project. With RVP continuously pushing at the exit door, learning Koscielny’s intention to stay offers consolation to everybody associated with Arsenal.
Of course, Robin van Persie is hungry for silverware before the ‘twilight years’ come to the fore. By witnessing Arsenal’s competitors advance, whilst the Gunners continue a period of stagnation (since 2005), the striker has lost faith in the club’s ability to share his ambition.

But trophies aren’t everything, as suggested by Laurent Koscielny. That is not to say the defender will never hold a trophy aloft whilst at Arsenal, but to become a legendary figure is more important. Koscielny wants to imitate the true greats, such as Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira. Outsiders criticise the Arsenal faithful for accepting heroes too quickly. Whether they do or don’t, Koscielny could certainly be the next Frenchman to steal Arsenal hearts. A new contract is an excellent boost to such an aspiration.

As their rivals delve into the stalls of the transfer market, Manchester City are yet to break sweat. Some fans may be concerned, as the chasers appear to become stronger, whilst their beloved Sky Blues simply watch from the throne. However, rest assured, Roberto Mancini never appears to be completely satisfied with the squad.
The astute Italian continuously seeks room for improvement. Plus, to compete across Europe, Manchester City may require additional strength to their already colossal project. But which areas require bolstering? Who should be the marquee signing?
Following Robin van Persie’s discontent with Arsenal, Manchester City, amongst others, have signalled their interest. Of course, why wouldn’t you? Last season, the goal-glutton Dutchman was supreme and thoroughly deserved the PFA Player of the Year accolade. Picture the combined vigour of Sergio Agüero and RVP. It would drive any avid fantasy league member insane as to which player to select. City fans would drool at such a prospect. More importantly, the forward department would, undisputedly, be the most qualified in the league.

However, Manchester City’s current strike force isn’t prodigal. To win the Premier League, the Sky Blues flaunted tremendous attacking potency, tallying ninety-three goals. Thus, purchasing another striker would be overindulgent. Also, Roberto Mancini should offload Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz beforehand if he were to consider additional forward options.
A more appropriate acquisition would be a versatile midfielder. However, such a player should be defensive-minded, as City boast an abundance of wizardry and guile with David Silva and Samir Nasri. Perhaps the most suited to the application is Javi Martínez. Indeed, Athletic Bilbao won’t budge on the minimum fee release clause (€40m), but the robust youngster could be worth every penny.

In football’s modern era, versatility is an important factor, as fluidity of movement is essential to breach and prevent breaches. Accomplished as a midfield anchor and a centre-back, Martínez adds great flexibility to the defensive game. His performances in the latter position were outstanding against Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United in the Europa League. Indeed, the Olympic-elect can comfortably perform the “Sergio Busquets role” – encourage the wing-backs to maraud the flanks whilst protecting the central defenders.
Technically superior to Gareth Barry and Nigel de Jong, Martínez would offer greater assistance to either. Furthermore, to sign the 23-year-old would allow the bulldozing Yaya Touré to increasingly occupy the opposition’s half. Manchester City appear as a new monster whenever Mancini gives Touré the green light to attack. Imagine the luminous green to never dim.
Needless to say, to obtain Martínez is easier said than done, especially if Barcelona are apparent competitors for his signature. Nevertheless, Manchester City should try hard to secure the player’s future. Such a signing could secure theirs for years to come. If all fails or interest is lost, however, an adaptable defensive-minded footballer should still be priority number one regardless.
