We are screaming for a specialist defensive midfielder and this guy is good! If it comes about, and I’ll believe it when I see it, it will mean we are beginning to make inroads into the gap between us and the 7 teams above us. I’ve been banging on about the need for somebody who specialises in this position for weeks so this would truly make my day. Nobody could ever beat Souness, in my opinion, but Alonso was the best since Souness and was the last good one we had. Prior to that Steve McMahon was good but, apart from those three we’ve struggled in that position with Lucas, Allen and current crop not filling the void adequately for my money. Let’s hope we get him, he’d do well at Anfield, but the lack of CL footie might mean he’ll go elsewhere . . .
