What went Wrong for the World Champions Spain – Everything

2014 FIFA World CupWho would have thought that the side that dominated World football for the past 6 years will be ousted from the World Cup with such humiliation.
Chile’s 2-0 victory over Spain ensured that there will be a new champions as the La Roja side lost back to back games for the first time since 2006 and at the worst possible occasion.
All that is left for Spain is a dead rubber against Australia and even a win against the Socceroos will not be enough consolation.
So, What went wrong for the World Champions. The answer to that is quite literally Everything.
Their defensive fragilities were well known and Netherlands absolutely ripped them apart in the opening game to shatter their confidence.
Captain and Legend Casillas, after his horrific display against Holland, made another costly error against Chile to gift them the second goal.
Having said that, Spain’s world class attack was nowhere to be found.
Apart from Iniesta, no one seemed comfortable against the rigid defense of Netherlands and Chile. Moreover, when they did find a way through, Diego Costa was in the worst form of his life.
With one of the best attacking squads in the world, Spain have only managed to score once and that too from an undeserved penalty kick and rarely did they create a clear cut opportunity. The goal difference of (-6), every single stat is unbelievably shocking.
Players like Juan Mata, Cesc Fabregas and David Villa were not even utilized and to think that Spain crashed out with such depth is even more shame.
They won the European Championships two years ago without much hassle and are now eliminated without even showing up. At least, Australians went down with a fight.
End of an Era.

  1. Right from the start they showed no interest at all.No coordination surely i can say they deserved it.

  2. Ramon says:

David Villa should have played, Costa just had no experience playing in the Spanish setup and it cost them big time.
Still can’t believe what happened. They ripped every team apart for fun not so long ago and last night they coult not even play football to save their lives

  3. I think their selection let them down. Del Bosque has relied too heavily on aging players – even though they won him so much, they’re past their peak. After EURO 2012 he should have looked to nurture fresh talent, but sticking with his old guns eventually cost him. Case and Point: after Iker Casillas’ game against Holland, he should have been benched. Also, I cannot fathom why players like Llorente and Negredo were overlooked for the squad.

    • Because he trusted them to deliver and they always did.
Torres was past his best before Euro 2012, selected and won Golden Boot, won it again at the Confed cup. Not really convincing but effective. Baffling that he did not have trust in David Villa even though he has always delivered and also scored 2 goals in their last warm up game.
Llorente was unlucky but not Negredo, He lost form, went 16 games without scoring and could only manage 1 league goal for City since the turn of the year. Navas was another player needed, his pace gives Spain another dimension/alternative to Tiki Taka.
Can have many arguments on the selection but no one can deny that those who made it are by all means top quality players as well… but failed big time.

  4. Timinstinct says:

Think its high time Spain.began to look into the future.we all saw the selection against the Australians ystd, how they performed brilliantly, nd won convincingly without Tiki-Taka
After the dismal performance of Barcelona this season, it is only ordinary that d core barca players in the Spanish team would perform below par cept for Iniesta who was outstanding.
It is definitely the end of an era, and the new generations are the likes of; De gea, Juanfran, Koke, Martinez, Alba, Juan, Carzola, Fabregas, Thiago, Llorenté negredo & so on built around Iniesta.
They need formidable central defenders. Ramos is still ok, but thinks Pique has past it.
Without overhauling the Spanish set up, and if they continue to depend on past Glory, gradually Spanish football will be in the downward troll. “Indeed it’s the end of an Era”
