Classic – Neil Mellor – Liverpool vs Arsenal

Classic - Neil Mellor - Liverpool vs ArsenalToday we bring you a stunning goal from 2004-05 premier league season scored by Liverpool youngster Neil Mellor against one of the best Arsenal sides to grace the English league. Mellor was Liverpool’s academy product who could only feature in 22 games for the reds in 4 years.
The England international played for the likes of West Ham, Wigan, Sheffield, Preston and retired last year at the age of 30 due to constant injury problems. He will mainly be remembered for two major contributions.
In 2004-2005, when Liverpool were seemingly going out of the Champions League needing two goals in remaining 10 minutes against Olympiacos. Mellor gave reds a lifeline by coming on and scoring from close range.
Few minutes later, he set up captain Steven Gerrard for “that” memorable strike that helped Liverpool qualify for the knock out rounds. Against all odds, they won their 5th European Cup.
However, he actually came in the limelight that season in the game versus Arsenal at Anfield. Spainard Xabi Alonso gave Liverpool the lead in the opening half but his goal was cancelled out by Vieira in the second.
As the game continued towards stalemate, Arsenal failed to clear a long ball in the dying minutes and it fell to Mellor who struck a brilliant volley from 25 odd yards to give Liverpool three points.
